Abstract
621,054. Reciprocating pumps. WAKEFIELD & CO., Ltd., C. C. June 3, 1946, No. 16822. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1945. [Class 102(i)] Apparatus for transferring liquids or semi-liquids comprises a pump barrel or cylinder 5, with spaced inlet and outlet openings 7, 17, the former being controlled by a valve 8, a plunger 12, having a valved transfer port 13 and reciprocable between the openings 7, 17 and a spring 18 for effecting a discharge of the liquid through the outlet 17 and simultaneously inducing a further charge of liquid past the inlet valve 8, the charge passing through the transfer port on the return stroke of the plunger. The barrel 5 is supported in a drum 2 by a spider 6 carrying the valve 8 of disc form. An actuating rod 11 is. screwed to the plunger 12, the openings 13 in which are controlled by a valve consisting of a flexible washer 14 and an annular member 15, the longitudinal movement of which is limited by a pin 16. A flexible hose, connects the outlet 17 to a spring- loaded valve 20, Fig. 3, which controls the delivery. The valve comprises a spring-loaded valve member 22, actuated by a button 25 attached to a rod 26, and a delivery nozzle 29 provided with a spring- loaded non-drip valve 30. An opening 11a in the hollow actuating rod 11 prevents excessive pressure in the outlet line. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate an alternative pump construction in which a hollow cylindrical stem 31, closed at its lower end, is a sliding fit over a hollow guide 32. An actuating rod 40 is a close fit inside an opening 42 such that when the guide 32 is filled with liquid from the previous operation, the downward movement of the actuating rod 40 closes the port 45 and forces down the stem 31, which is attached to the plunger 34 to compress the spring 18 and during this movement liquid is transferred from the lower to the upper side of the plunger 34 which is then held in this position whilst the actuating rod is again raised to uncover port 45 and admit liquid to the underside of the rod 40. This cycle is repeated to compress the spring 18 to the required extent.
