Abstract
1402373 Delivering measured quantities of liquid ALFA-LAVAL AB 6 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 27070/73 Heading B8N A fluid apparatus, such as a liquid measuring apparatus for dispensing foodstuffs comprises a piston 2 provided with a seal 34, 35 at each end and one or more recesses 37 of axial length greater than the distance between annular zones 31, 36 provided in the cylinder 1, and a piston limiting stop 23, 23a which can be adjusted to permit the piston to move to a position where the seals are located within the annular zones and the recesses interconnect the annular zones so that liquid may flow past the piston during a cleaning operation. During normal use, the three recesses 37 provided in the piston 2 allow escape of air bubbles. A pump 19 continuously supplies the liquid to the apparatus from a container 18 and a control unit 17 operates the opening and closing of valves 9 to 12 upon receiving signals initiated by the piston at the ends of its stroke. The piston 2 may be reciprocated by the liquid supply acting alternately on opposite ends of the piston or by a piston-rod. The downward movement of the piston 2 may be limited by a rod 20 which can be set in the desired position. The upward movement of the piston may be limited by the stop 23, 23a which is locked in its lower position by liquid from a container 30. When a cleaning operation is to be performed a valve 30a is opened by the control unit 17 to allow the liquid above the stop to be pushed back into the container 30 when pressed by the piston 2 under the action of the pressure of cleaning liquid. When in the upper position as shown in Fig. 3, the cleaning liquid can flow past the piston. To assist the seals 34, 35 to be cleaned, one side of the seal grooves may be provided with openings 38. The grooves are preferably of dovetail cross-section. If the piston 2 is reciprocated by a piston-rod then this must be disconnected before a cleaning operation. Alternatively, the annular zones 31, 36 may be constituted by a ring of axiallyextending recesses and the three recesses 37 in the piston replaced by a single annular one.
