Abstract
1437335 Reciprocating pumps METERING PUMPS Ltd 21 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972 2 March 1973] 39324/72 and 10287/73 Heading F1A A pump, e.g. for chromatography analysis, comprises a piston 12 reciprocable for pumping in the smaller diameter bore 9 of a stepped cylinder 8, and movable into the larger diameter bore 10 for flushing. The piston is reciprocated by a screw 15 engaging a captive nut 13, the discharge stroke being effected by a variable-speed stepping motor (61), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a fast return stroke being effected by a fast drive motor (63) connected to the stepping motor by a clutch (64), which disengages the stepping motor from the pump drive when the fast drive motor is energized. Limit switches (50, 51), Fig. 4 (not shown), stop the piston at the top and bottom of its strokes in bore 9, a switch being provided to over-ride the lower limit switch to permit movement of the piston into bore 10 for flushing. During flushing, liquid drains via channel 21 and outlet 21a. A seal 18a, 18b, e.g. of P.T.F.E., has a bearing portion 19 with a leakage drain 20, 20a. A rupture disc 49 by-passes delivery to drain 21a when a predetermined delivery pressure is exceeded.
