Abstract

818,261. Reciprocating pumps. JOSEPHS, D. P. H. Nov. 30, 1956 [Dec. 2, 1955], No. 34525/55. Class 102(1). A pump, for dispensing herbicidal liquids, comprises a tubular member 1, an end cap 3 and a dished shape member 6 forming a reservoir 9 and a pumping chamber 8. A piston 10, urged downwards by spring 11, carries a piston rod 5 which extends through a cylindrical boss 12 of the cap 3. In operation the piston rod 5 is placed on a surface, such as a lawn, and the tubular member 1 is moved downwards, the lower thickend portion of the rod 5 closes orifices 17 in the cylindrical boss 12 and the liquid in the reservoir 9 flows downwards round the side of the piston 10. On releasing the member 1 which moves upwards, liquid is forced by the piston 10 through passage 14, forced by the narrow portion 13 of the rod 5, and is discharged through the orifices 17. A seal 18 is attached to the lower side of the piston 10 to prevent leakage of the liquid when the pump is not in use.
