Abstract
791,664. Heat exchangers. DYNAMITAKT. - GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO. Aug. 2, 1955 [Aug. 11, 1954], No. 22193/55. Class 64(3) Heat exchange apparatus comprises a pair of members made of graphite or of graphite with a binder material with the graphite predominating, each said member having channels or grooves therein along which a fluid to be heated or cooled is caused to flow, the arrangement being such that said fluid flows from an inlet in one member outwardly through the grooves or channels therein towards the periphery of that member, and then inwardly through the grooves or channels in the other member towards the centre of and through an outlet from that member. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form in which each member is cylindrical and in which the channels or grooves 3 radiate from the centre to adjacent the outer edge. The two members 1, 2 are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 with a plate 4 interposed so that the fluid enters the central opening in member 1, flows radially outwardly through the channels or grooves 3 therein and then radially inwardly through the channels or grooves 3 in member 2 to its central opening. The channels or grooves 3 may radiate in a spiral course (Fig. 3, not shown). The plate 4 is made of a material similar to that of the members 1, 2. A plurality of similar units each comprising a pair of members 1. 2 may be interconnected, e.g. by screw nipples, to form a column, the central opening in each member being threaded as at 6 for this purpose. The column may be used as a condenser or may be surrounded by a jacket through which flows a heating or cooling fluid. External ribs (not shown) or, grooves 8 may be provided on or in the members 1, 2 to aid heat transfer. Specifications 698,966 and 747,473 are referred to.
