Abstract

1,239,854. Tubular heat exchangers. WAAGNER-BIRO A.G. 10 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 1741/69. Heading F4S. In a tubular heat exchanger comprising a bank of tubes, throttling devices are provided at the fluid inlet ends of the tubes, and at the fluid outlet ends of the tubes are means for measuring the exit temperature of the fluid, the throttling devices being removable to permit them to be replaced or to allow their flow characteristics to be modified so as to achieve a uniform exit temperature of the fluid streams passing out of the individual tubes, or groups of tubes. The throttling devices may comprise nozzles (21, Fig. 4) screwed into individual tubes, or an apertured plate (19, Fig. 3) bolted to the tube end plate (11). The invention is utilized particularly if a tube becomes defective resulting in uneven fluid temperatures at the exit ends of the tubes and hence in uneven heat transfer rates in the tube assembly. Temperature sensing means e.g. thermocouples (24, Figs. 5 and 6) may be provided at the fluid outlet ends of the tubes to detect such temperature variations, whereupon appropriate changes can be made in the throttling devices to restore the uniformity of heat transfer.
