Abstract

637,225. Plate heat-exchangers. SPEARING, K. A. March 19, 1946, No. 8493. [Class 64(iii)] A heat-exchanger comprises a series of elements 11 each having an internal space 11k for one fluid, e.g. a vapour, and opposite, external surfaces formed with concentric annular fins 11c, those on adjacent elements being interposed so as to define a channel of uniform width and decreasing surface area for the other fluid, e.g. a viscous liquid, which flows across the fins. The end elements 10, 12 have one finned and one plain unfinned external surface each. The vapour is introduced into each internal space 11k, which is annular in shape, through an inlet 13, Fig. 6, at the circumference and directed away from the centre in order to promote circulation of the fluid in the space, the outlet 14 being arranged in an opposite manner to assist removal of the condensate. The inlets and outlets are connected respectively to vapour and condensate manifolds (not shown). Bolts 16 and a perforated tube 17 are screwed respectively into an outer ring and central boss of a member 15 and project from either side thereof to support the elements mounted upon them. The viscous liquid enters the member 15 and passes into the spaces of annular section formed between the bolts 16 and the holes 11e at the edge of each element. From these spaces the liquid flows radially across the fins 11c to perforations 17a in the axial tube and through the latter to the outlet 15a in the member 15.
