Abstract

791,418. Travelling bend filters. EIMCO CORPORATION. May 3, 1956 [June 29, 1955], No. 13693/56. Class 46. A filter comprises an endless filter medium 28, Fig. 1, extending over a rotary drum and carries filter cake formed in passing over the drum to a discharge roller 30. The filter medium passes over a washing roller 32 and roller 34 which is adjustable to vary the tension in the filter medium. At least one of the rollers 30, 32, 34 is self-aligning being responsive to lateral movement of the filter medium to maintain the medium centred on the drum 10. This roller comprises a shaft 52, Fig. 2, supported in bearings 54. The roller is formed as two separate cylinder parts 68 having bearing blocks 64 with curved inner surfaces, trays 62 fixed to the blocks 64 fit key-ways in hub portions 58, fixed to the shaft 52, and provide relative rotative movement between the shaft and the cylinder parts 68. The inner ends of the cylinders 68 are located in alignment with one another by positioning member 70. The cylinders are thus mounted for limited rocking and longitudinal movement relative to shaft 52 and the force exerted by the filter medium 28 passing over the rollers corrects any lateral movement of the filter medium. This type of roller is not restricted to rotary filters but may be used to centralise the filter medium in other types of filters having a moving endless filter medium. In a modification a non-yielding surface roller is mounted in a support pivoted about an axis normal to the axis of the roller so that the roller is angularly displaced bodily should the filter medium creep towards one or the other lateral edge of the roller whereby the filter medium would return to its normal centred position. In a further modification the roller is mounted in resiliently displaceable bearing blocks so that the roller is tiltable to an askew position by movement of the filter medium off centre, to return the medium to its centered position.
