Abstract

807,062. Endless belt conveyers. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Jan. 27, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954], No. 5371/56. Divided out of 807,061. Class 78 (1). [Also in Groups VIII and XVI] A supporting roller adapted to maintain a moving strip or endless conveyer belt running centrally thereof has two or more portions rotating about axes which may be coincident or separate, the portions together supporting the belt over its width, each portion having its peripheral surface formed by a pair of surface sections one on each side of a transverse radial plane intermediate the ends of the portion and each of the surface sections being constructed in such manner that under load it will be deflected towards the axis of the portion and the transverse plane. In one form, Fig. 1, the roller consists of an axle 40 on which are mounted two portions 42, 44 each consisting of solid rubber or other resilient material and formed in its periphery on each side of a central transverse plane with slits 48 which are inclined towards the roller axis and away from the central transverse plane. In another form having three roller portions (Fig. 5, not shown) the roller portions have concave peripheries to support a troughed belt. In a further modification having five roller portions (Fig. 8, not shown) the portions are mounted on separate axles, those of the outer portions being above that of the central portion, to support a wide, deeply troughed belt. In another construction, Fig. 6, each roller portion is formed by a rigid rotatable part 94<SP>1</SP> on which a covering 94 of resilient material provided with the slits is bonded, the portions being mounted on separate axles 96, 100. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, each roller portion consists of two parts 64 each having a rim 66 supported by a web 68 keyed to a shaft 58. Each rim and its supporting web is so constructed that inherent resiliency of the assembly will secure deflection towards the shaft 58 at the inner end of the rim and resultant continual tilting and inward movement under load. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 709,908 and 735,561.
