Abstract
1433435 Rollers A AHLSTROM DEVELOPMENT GmbH 21 May 1974 [3 July 1973] 22645/74 Heading F2U A roller comprises a non-rotating support 1 on which a plurality of roller sections 4 are rotatably mounted, each supported by a bearing unit 6 whose inner race is non-rotatably mounted on a sleeve 9 which is radially adjustable relative to the support 1 by biasing means in opposition to the contact pressure of a web 20, there being means for restraining the adjustment displacements to motions within a radial plane, and with only one degree of freedom. In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown an embodiment in which a sleeve 9 is mounted on one side in a pivot joint 10, the sleeve 9 being pivoted, and so moved substantially radially, by a headed stem 18, whose head bears against a sleeve 15 containing pressure medium. One sleeve 15 is common to all the stems 18 of the roller sections 4 to create a pressure balance. A pipe 23 and outlets 24 may spray lubricant on to the bearings 6. A resilient sleeve 5 may be provided over the sections 4. In alternative embodiments the sleeve 15 may be replaced by a bellows or a diaphragm individual to each stem 18, with the interior of the support 1 filled with a pressure medium to bias the stems 18 via these (Fig. 4, not shown) or the pressure medium may be in a separate pressure chamber within the support 1 (Fig. 5, not shown). In further alternative embodiments the pivots 10 are replaced by guides for guiding the adjustment of sleeves, bearings and roller sections in a single radial direction. One such is shown in Fig. 8 where two stems 41 are guided in ball bushings 45, rolling seals 47 being provided for the stems which are acted upon by pressure in the support 1. The stems may be as in Fig. 1 and act against a tube 15 (Fig. 6, not shown) and the straight-line guidance may be provided at the ends of a sleeve 9 which extends the entire length of a roller section 4, instead of with the stem or stems (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). The roller may be a curved axis roller for stretching a material across its width (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown), the resilient cover 5 here being omitted. The web 20 may comprise paper.
