790,468. Sets for deaf persons. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 3, 1956 [Oct. 6, 1955], No. 30129/56. Class 40 (4). In a pocket hearing-aid consisting of a flat box containing a microphone, amplifier, and battery, the microphone is suspended resiliently in a space insulated in a sound-proof manner from the rest of the box and communicating with the atmosphere through at least one opening in the wall of the box, and the resonant frequency of the microphone space together with its opening(s) lies above the pass-band of the apparatus. As shown, the hearing-aid has a frame 1 of synthetic resin and the conventional ports including a number of transistors 3, a microphone 5, a volume control 7 and a battery 9 are housed in a compartment at its back. A front cover 11 and a back cover (not shown) are provided, one or more earphones (not shown) being connected by inserting their plugs into sockets 13 in the upper edge of frame 1. The microphone 5, provided at the front with a circular opening 15, is secured by three foamed rubber suspension elements 17 in a metal ring 19 having two contacts 21. Contact springs 23, secured to the frame 1, co-act with these contacts and also serve to press the ring 19 against a curved rim 25 formed on the frame 1. The free front edge of rim 25 carries a rubber strip 27 of H-shaped section which engages the inner side of the cover 11 to form a sound-tight closure of the microphone space bounded by the rim 25. The resonant frequency of this space together with the opening 29 thereof is chosen to lie above the pass-band of the apparatus, thus reducing " clothes noise " when the hearing-aid is in use.
