Abstract

789,155. Rolling tubular articles. WEISS, E. March 21, 1956 [April 2, 1955], No. 8869/56. Class 83 (4). In a method of rolling hollow bodies such as tubes, pressure cylinders or shell forgings the workpiece is placed over a mandrel and driven through roll passes comprising five to seven rolls which may be freely rotating or driven. In one example, a pierced billet a<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is rolled on a mandrel d between rolls e<SP>1</SP> having convex faces which meet at points lying on the projected outline of the billet and form rounded longitudinal ribs g. In the next pass the rolls b2, Fig. 3, have substantially rectilinear profiles and engage over the ribs g. The final set of rolls b<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 4, are slightly concave and impart to the work a substantially rounded form. The work may be finally 'rounded in a circular pass between rolls or may be turned or ground.
