Abstract

18,996. Briede, O. Sept. 20. Rolling.-In rolling down billets on mandrels, the billet is reduced, elongated, and caused to grip the mandrel in a circular pass 2, is enlarged transversely in an oval pass 3 and then only grips the mandrel at opposite points, and is brought to a circular shape and freed from the mandrel by a third pass 4. The series of operations is repeated until the tube is of the required size. The rolls 3; 4 may be arranged in the same housing as the rolls 2, the reducing-passes may be formed in the middle and uppermost rolls of a three-high mill, and the releasing-passes in the middle and lowest rolls, or the two sets of passes a, b, c and d, e may alternate in a two-high mill, but the passes d, e may only effect the transverse enlarging of the billet, and rolls 17 return it to a circular form.
