789,118. Journal and bearing assembly. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 17, 1956 [Aug. 22, 1955; Feb. 20, 1956], No. 22067/56. Class 12 (1). A journal and bearing assembly comprises the combination of a housing 32 enclosing the end 10 of an axle of a rail car carrying a hardened steel cup-shaped member 12 having a sleeve 14 which is shrink-fitted on the axle end 10 and secured thereto by bolts 16, 18. A sleeve bearing 22 surrounds the sleeve 14 of the journal and has an opening within which is disposed a lubricator 26. The bearing 22 is secured by dowels in a housing 32 having an opening 36 for filling the housing with oil. The housing carries externally at its end a series of fins 40 to dissipate heat. In the end wall there is also an opening 42 closed by a breather cap assembly 44. At the other end of housing 32, there is an oil seal 62 carried by a ring 60 and engaging a hardened thrust-ring 66 shrink-fitted on the axle end 10. The end face 73 of the ring 66 is normally spaced from the end of the sleeve bearing 22 to form an annular space 74. To lubricate faces 73, 74, a wick lubricator 75 is provided. The construction incorporates a onepiece housing 32 which surrounds the journal 10 and which contains the bearing lubricant 26 and oil seal 62. The full round bearing sleeve 22 maintains proper journal and bearing alignment. The wear and scoring of journal is reduced by means of hard replaceable sleeve 12, 14. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the sleeve 14 is mechanically locked to the journal instead of being shrink-fitted. A second end-thrust device is also provided at the outer end of the journal.
