Abstract

788,814. Metal coated fibres. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. July 5, 1955 [Aug. 11, 1954], No. 19423/55. Class 82(2) [Also in Group VIII] Coated mineral fibres e.g. glass are made by attenuating streams of the molten mineral emitted by a feeder and then coating by an applicator between the attenuator and the feeder, the applicator retaining the coating material due to its surface tension. A force - exerting device acts on the fibres between the feeder and the coating device to increase the tension on the fibres at the coating point, the object being to facilitate wetting of the fibres by keeping them in the coating liquid against the forces of surface tension. In one embodiment the mineral (glass) is contained in a melting oven 10 and drawn from nozzles 12. The winding device 21 exerts a sufficient pull to fulfill the coating requirements and the forceexerting device 25 reduces the tension in the fibres to that required for attenuation of the - molten stream. A sizing roller 18 is also provided. In a modification (not shown), the force-exerting device 25 is omitted and jets of air are directed on to the fibres at a suitable angle instead. The coating material may be metallic or non- metallic. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 745,279.
