Abstract

1,093,895. Moulds. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. March 25, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 12654/64. Heading B3F. A method of making a refractory shell mould comprising the steps of coating a readilydispersible pattern with a refractory material to form a rigid compact shell and applying to the outer surface of the shell, that is the surface not in contact with the molten metal during a casting operation, a heat-resisting inorganic fibrous material to form a highly porous covering of low heat conductivity. The covering may be applied by spray coating a mixture of the fibrous material, a binder and a liquid. The coating may be applied to selected parts only of the outer surface of the shell. Alternatively, the coating may be applied by winding on the inorganic fibrous material in the form of tape, cord, roving or the like. The inorganic fibrous material is preferably asbestos or similar mineral fibre or it may be a synthetic mineral wool or glass fibre. A suitable material is sold under the trade mark " Refrasil."
