Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent growth of microcracks on the surface of optical fiber and lowering in strength due to the growth by cooling optical fiber to a desired temp. immediately after spinning and before contact to other solid matter and by coating the fiber surface with a plastic layer. CONSTITUTION:Fiber base material 8 is spun with spinning furnace 9. After measuring 10 the outside diameter the resulting fiber is fed to cooler 11 and cooled to a predetermined temp. with low temp. gas supplied from liquefied gas container 19 through gas heater 18 and flow rate regulation valve 17. The cooled fiber is fed into resin such as epoxy resin in coating head 12 and passed through baking furnace 13 to perform plastic coating. The coated fiber is then passed through outside diameter measuring device 14 and coiled with coiler 16. By this method the production line speed is remarkably enhanced, and the thickness of the primary coat can be made uniform while controlling the outside diameter of the fiber.
