Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material of a reduced OH content causing an increase in the absorption loss by depositing a synthetic glass film on the inside of a quartz pipe after lowering the concn. of OH groups in a surface layer of the inner wall of the pipe when the base material is manufactured by depositing the film. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber base material is manufactured by depositing a synthetic glass film on the inside of quartz pipe 10 by an internal sticking CVD method, in order to lower the concn. of OH groups in a surface layer of the inner wall of pipe 10 beforehand, pipe 10 is held between chucks 12, 14, rotated, and heated to about 1,800-2,000 deg.C with moving oxyhydrogen burner 18 while feeding dry gas 16 such as O2, N2 or Ar. At this time, in order to prevent the contraction of pipe 10 exhaust cylinder 20 is connected to pipe 10, and exhaust port 22 is regulated to apply an internal pressure with gas 16. A synthetic glass film is then deposited on the inside of pipe 10 to manufacture a base material.
