Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material having a refractive index distribution which is changed periodically by using a glass tube which is changed in outside diameter so that the thickness of the wall of the reaction tube is changed with a specified period in the longitudinal direction. CONSTITUTION:Reaction tube 1 is periodically provided with thin-walled portions A and thick-walled portions B in the longitudinal direction. Gases of halogen compounds of Si, Ge, P, B, etc. as glass starting materials are introduced into rotating reaction tube 1 with oxygen as carrier gas, and glass film 5 for a core is formed by local heating with heating source 4 moving in the longitudinal direction of tube 1. Since portions A, B are made different from each other in temp. by the heating, the amount of a refractive index controlling dopant in film 5 deposited on the inner wall of tube 1 changes periodically in proportion to the temp. change. The amount of the dopant is controlled every deposited layer, and the outer protrusions are cut and polished to obtain a straight rodlike base material.
