Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material by adding a specified additive to starting gases and depositing a synthetic glass film on the inside of a quartz tube by an internal sticking CVD method to reduce the amount of OH groups diffused in the core from the quartz tube. CONSTITUTION:In a method of manufacturing a base material by depositing a synthetic glass film on the inside of a starting quartz tube by an internal sticking CVD method, to starting material gases is added an additive which lowers the transparent vitrification temp. of synthetic glass and dose not change the refractive index. Cl2 gas is preferably used as the additive, and He may be used to inhibit bubbling due to Cl2 gas.
