Abstract
1456537 Optical waveguides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 25 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 13811/74 Heading C1M An optical waveguide comprising a fibre of vitreous silica containing a dopant so distributed that the fibre has a desired refractive index profile across any cross-section thereof, the dopant consisting of one or more non-metallic elements (e.g. N 2 ), each of which has been introduced into the fibre by exposure of at least part of the SiO 2 to the element(s) in gaseous form, is prepared by forming a rod or tube of the doped vitreous silica as a core component, and inserting the core into a cladding tube, either of pure vitreous silica or of silica containing the same dopant but in different concentration, the dopant being introduced into the silica of the core before, during or after formation of the core. The core/cladding assembly is then heated and drawn to a fibre, the dopant diffusing through the silica to give the desired refractive index profile. The vitreous silica may be prepared by oxidation of SiCl 4 vapour in a hydrogen-free atmosphere, the dopant being entrained in the reaction mixture. Alternatively, the dopant gas may be passed through a silica tube, a dopant-free gas being maintained outside the tube. The core/cladding assembly may be drawn at 1900-2000‹ C. in an Ar or Ar/O 2 atmosphere.
