Abstract

1473779 Glass fibre preform GENERAL CABLE CORP 13 Nov 1975 [13 Nov 1974] 46895/75 Heading C1M A preform suitable for drawing down to make an optical fibre comprises a core with a cladding of a different glass and having a radially inner part with a lower refractive index than the core and a radially outer part of higher refractive index and higher softening point than the inner part, said softening point being approximately equal to that of the core. The preform may be made by heat treating an alkali-borosilicate tube to separate the glass into a high silica phase and a low-silica acid soluble phase; leaching with HCI, H 2 SO 4 or HNO 3 ; introducing B 2 O 3 into the porous tube so that the amount thereof in the radially inner part is substantially greater than that in the outer part (e.g. by homogeneous dispersion followed by ammonia leaching from the outside or by inhomogeneous impregnating from the inside to the outside); and fusing the treated tube to a silica glass core. The preform then being drawn to a fibre. Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings show the variation of refractive index and softening temperature over the radius of a preform from the centre of the core to the outside of the cladding for two embodiments of the invention.
