Abstract
Novel dopants (dopes), namely oxides of the elements gallium, indium, arsenic and antimony, are used in a process known per se for the production of a blank for optical fibres. The inner wall of a glass tube (11) is coated with a layer (10) which, after the glass tube has been collapsed to give a blank and after the latter has been drawn to form an optical fibre, forms the fibre core. This has a higher refractive index than the fibre cladding layer formed from the glass tube.
