Abstract
1376963 Optical fibres AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 28 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30259/72 Heading C1M An optical fibre 10 is produced by cladding a glass core 13 with a first cladding glass 12 which has a lower refractive index and then providing a second cladding 11 formed of a glass having a lower viscosity than the first cladding material at the same temperature, fusing a plurality of thus clad cores to form a bundle the crosssectional area of the second cladding 11 being chosen so that when drawn at least a minimum free air space is provided between adjacent fibres. The second cladding is an acid soluble glass which is removed by etching to produce a flexible optical fibre bundle. Preferably the clad cores are drawn to a predetermined dimension prior to being fused.
