Abstract
1531623 Optical fibres QUARTZ & SILICE 9 July 1976 [11 July 1975] 28669/76 Heading C1M An optical fibre with a parabolic radial gradient of refractive index is made by locating a rod of a first glass within a sheath of a second glass, the glasses containing different ions capable of mutual interdiffusion and the first glass having a higher refractive index than the second, subjecting successive zones of the composite along its length to internal heating, to allow for ion diffusion, and drawing to fibre form. The internal heating may be by way of HF induction, dielectric loss or use of a hyper-frequency wave guide and the composite may be heated externally (e.g. by flame, graphite or metal heating ring or C0 2 laser) before internal heating. The fibres may be drawn off vertically downwards or horizontally and the diffusing ions may be Tl or Cs in the first glass and alkali metal ions in the second.
