Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high refractive-index optical element usable as organic lenses for glasses, etc., by copolymerizing diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate), etc. with benzyl methacrylate. CONSTITUTION:A mixed monomer consisting mainly of (A) diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate) of formulaIand/or methyl methacrylate and (B) benzyl methacrylate of formula II is copolymerized to give an optical element having a refractive index of 1.5 or higher, preferably 1.51-1.54. Organic lenses having the same refractive index as inorganic glass lenses and improved properties can be obtained by the casting method.
