Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent an absorption loss due to OH group by depositing a clad layer and a core layer inside a pipe and depositing a P2O5 glass film on the inner surface of the core layer. CONSTITUTION:Water contained in the internal gas of a pipe is prevented from being taken in a core for a fiber base material as OH groups in a process of making the pipe with films formed solid to manufacture a water-free optical fiber base material. For example, SiCl4 and O2 are fed into a quartz pipe and heated at 1,750 deg.C to deposit a synthetic quartz glass film 18 times. SiCl4 and GeCl4 are then fed to deposit an SiO2-GeO2 glass film 5 times as a core layer. POCl3 is further fed and heated at 1,850 deg.C to deposit a P2O5 glass film. Thus, the time required to make the pipe with the films formed solid is reduced, and impurities, especially water produced in the pipe in the deposition processes are removed.
