Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material with a small transmission loss by forming an OH group diffusion preventing carbide on the inside of a glass pipe and forming a deposition layer on the pipe inside. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber base material with a very small transmission loss due to OH group is manufactured by forming a carbide layer such as a silicon carbide layer on the inside of a glass pipe. For example, CH3SiCl3 as starting material is fed into glass pipe 1 with Ar gas as carrier gas, and while rotating pipe 1 the outside of pipe 1 is heated with an oxyhydrogen flame to thermally decompose the CH3SiCl3 at about 1,400 deg.C. Thus, a silicon carbide thin film is formed on the pipe inside. Deposition layer 3 based on Si and contg. P, B, Ge, etc. as a dopant is then deposited by a MCVD method, and an optical fiber base material is formed through a vitrifying process, a collapsing process, etc. and spun by drawing to obtain an optical fiber.
