Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having a refractive index which changes periodically in the longitudinal direction by periodically changing over the flowing directions of dopant starting material vapors different from each other in the flow rate of carrier gas with cocks while allowing the vapors to flow continually. CONSTITUTION:O2 is introduced into bubblers 5, 6 filled with dopant starting material GeCl4 after adjusting the flow rate with mass flow controllers 2, 3 so that the coefficient of refractive index distribution becomes alpha1, alpha2, and GeCl4 is fed to reaction tube 7 together with SiCl4 and O2 of a fixed flow rate from bubbler 4. Changeover cocks C1, C2 are attached in the vicinity of the inlet of tube 7 and changed over with controller 11. When burner 10 for heating tube 7 moves in the D direction, by pushing odd switches S2i-1 and even switches S2i, the starting material vapors flow in the A direction and the B direction with cocks C1, C2, respectively, and different glass layers are deposited on the inner wall of tube 7. A desired optical fiber is then obtd. through a collapsing process and a drawing process.
