Abstract

776,638. Glass fibres. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1955 [Dec: 20, 1954], No. 35514/55. Class 56 In a drawing of continuous glass fibres the strand is engaged by a single moving surface and successive parts of the strand along its length are caused to adhere momentarily to the moving surface whereby drawing tension is applied. Several forms are described. In Fig. 1, for example the strand 24 is wetted at the gathering shoe 23 and thereby caused to adhere to the wheel 27 until it is blown therefrom by an air-jet 29. In Fig. 5 the strand 33 is guided on to the wheel 34 by an arcuate shoe 35 and after traversing most of the periphery of the wheel is removed by the piling up of entrained air in front of a deflector 36. In Fig. 11 the wheel 41 is provided with tapering notches 42 and the strand 44 can be guided by a shoe 45 and carriage 46 so as to engage the whole surface of the wheel or less thereof as the carriage is moved towards the left thereby varying the drawing tension on the strand. In Fig. 14 the periphery of the wheel 49 is provided with non-wettable insets 53 so that the strand 51 tends to cling tightly to the wettable areas 52 and to leave the wheel at a non-wettable portion 53. In Fig. 18 the non-wettable insets 53 are replaced by notches 58.
