Abstract

934,613. Coating with metals. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1961, No. 28498/61. Class 82. [Also in Groups VIII, IX and XXIII] Ribbon-like glass filaments 32 are coated with metal by passing the filament in front of the lip 44, 44<SP>1</SP> of a receptacle 40, 40<SP>1</SP> containing molten metal 42, 42<SP>1</SP>. As in Fig. 1, the filament 32 wipes the metal 42 on the lip to give a coating 33 on one side only. In Fig. 3, the filament 32 is drawn at an angle for the rear wall 18<SP>1</SP> of a molten glass receptacle so as to pass through the mass 45 of the metal 42<SP>1</SP> on the lip.44<SP>1</SP> to coat the filament on all sides and edges at 33<SP>1</SP>. The metal may be aluminium, chromium, zinc or lead. The coated filaments may be twisted prior to collection on a drawing collet 35 by a rotating guide.
