Abstract

1320908 Carbon fibres coated with glass or glass-ceramic ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 21 Aug 1970 [26 Aug 1969] 42381/69 Heading C1M Carbon fibres are coated with glass or glassceramic. The composition chosen may have a matching coefficient of thermal expansion as the carbon or be a slight mis-match. Coatings are preferably up to 10 Ám, the coated fibre still being flexible. A number of different kinds of glasses are suggested, with some examples, and glass-ceramic systems. Coating may be effected by drawing the carbon fibre through molten glass in a non-oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. A; N 2 ; or N 2 and H 2 ), as through a bead held on a loop of electrically heated wire or in a metal bushing with a small hole in the base. Other methods suggested are coating with a powdered glass, or a suspension in water or methylated spirits, and passing through a furnace in which deposition of the powder can be assisted by electrophoresis, or by vacuum deposition. A bundle may be coated together. The coated fibres may be used for composites with resins, metals or glass or glassceramic. Specifications 1,136,474 and 1,174,474 are referred to.
