Abstract
A carbonaceous surface, e.g. a crucible or socket nozzle is coated with silicon carbide by first heating to 1000 DEG to 1450 DEG C. in an atmosphere of a halogenated silane to deposit a layer of silicon, heating to melt the silicon to cause it to be adsorbed into the surface, and silicon carbide to be formed, cooling to a temperature above 1050 DEG C. and then depositing silicon carbide from a silicon and carbon containing gas, e.g. lower alkylsilanes. Excess silicon may be removed with hydrochloric acid prior to the silicon carbide deposition.
