Abstract

1309155 Coating with Group V carbides by fused salt baths TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 2 Nov 1970 [1 Nov 1969] 52097/70 Heading C7F Ferrous substrates are coated with a carbide of V, Ta or Nb by dipping the substrate in a fused salt bath containing boric acid or a borate, V, Ta or Nb as an element or compound and a source of carbon which may be added to the bath or derived from the graphite crucible containing the melt or from the carbon conduit of the substrate. The fused bath preferably contains 1-70% of V, Ta or Nb and in addition to borax may also contain NaCl, NaF, KCl, P 2 O 5 , NaOH, KOH, sulphates, carbonates or nitrates. The bath temperature is 800‹-1100‹C and the substrate is dipped in the bath for up to 30 hours using an air or inert atmosphere. NaCN may be added to the bath as a carbon source and the V, Ta and Nb may be added as the ferro alloys.
