Abstract

788,424. Photographic silver halide image transfer processes and products. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. March 7, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 7134/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) A layer of alkaline processing solution is provided between the exposed silver halide stratum and the print receiving element of a photosensitive product, and a stratum of an enteric material which is impermeable to water but permeable by alkaline liquids is provided on the further side of the exposed silver halide stratum, with a view of increasing the rate or volume of absorption by the solution and thereby reducing the thickness of the layer thereof, for the purpose of minimizing lateral diffusion of the silver halide complexes formed in processing and so producing a positive print of high resolution in the receiving element. In the drawing, in which the product is in condition undergoing processing, the film support (1) may be of plastic or, preferably, of porous paper, the enteric material (2) cellulose acetate hydrogen phthalate, polyvinyl hydrogen phthalate, shellac or Japan wax, materials which provide a smooth surface for the photosensitive silver halide stratum (3) which may be of high speed gelatin emulsion; the alkaline processing solution (4) may comprise sodium-carboxymethyl cellulose, -sulphite, -hydroxide, -thiosulphate, and -sulphate and may be introduced with the aid of a pair of pressure rolls or may be coated on the outer face of the silver halide stratum or on the stripping layer (5) as of gum arabic (and which layer may be omitted if desired); the silver precipitating layer (6) may comprise a matrix of silica with metallic sulphides incorporated therein, the waterproof subcoat (7) may be of polyvinyl butyral and the base (8) the same material or may be film or paper. After processing and image transfer is completed the photosensitive and print receiving portions are separated with the layer of processing solution, which by this time has formed into a film, adhered to either of these, particularly the former portion, to leave the transferred print open to view; or the print may lie in the dried layer of processing solution, in which case the latter may remain as integral part of the receiving element.
