786,865. Lifting devices for engaging articles. McALPINE & SONS, Ltd., Sir R. April 13, 1956 [April 21, 1955], No. 11585/55. Class 78 (4). A device for lifting piles, girders and other elongated objects is released by a control member which first withdraws a pin 14 against a bias from engagement with a shackle pin 10 and then acts against a further bias to withdraw the shackle pin 10 from registering holes in the object to be lifted and in jaws 4, 5 enveloping it. In the arrangement illustrated the locking pin 14 is slid against the bias of a spring 17 by a cable 19 which passes through a guide 15 on the body of the lifting device and then through a guide 20 carried by one arm of a bell crank 11 controlling the motion of the shackle pin 10 and controlled by a spring 12. Each jaw 4, 5 has a pair of spaced webs 4<SP>1</SP>, 51 between which the pin 14 and the shackle pin 10 and bell crank 11 are housed. A plunger 21, which may be withdrawn by a knob 23, is biased to engage over the upper edge of the bell crank 11 to hold the device in the unlatched position illustrated. A handle 24 facilitates manipulating the device.
