Abstract

784,589. Fuel injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. April 27, 1956 [May 13, 1955], No. 13854/55. Class 102(1). In a fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines of the type where fuel is fed from a feed pump to an injection pump, the two plungers of the injection pump are reciprocated by a cam so that the injection rate of the fuel varies. The cam c has equally spaced lobes f. Between the lobes are formed two shallow recesses g and two deeper recesses h. The body containing the plungers rotates in the direction of the arrow and the inward movement of the plunger in contact with the shallow recess g commences at i and the movement of the plunger in the deeper recess h commences at j. The latter point j is angularly in advance of i and consequently the plunger having the longer stroke commences its inward movement earlier than the other. In a modification the recesses are of the same depth but two adjacent lobes are retarded relative to the other two. The number of plungers or lobes may be varied to suit the number of cylinders in the engine and the cam may be angularly adjustable.
