A piston 1 of a fuelinjection pump has a control edge 2 for varying the cut-off of the injection and beyond the range of this control edge, a groove 5 is provided to permit a retarded beginning of injection and a larger amount of fuel for starting; the lower edge of the groove 5 may be inclined to permit a variable beginning of injection during the starting range. Fig. 4 shows a groove 5 arranged on a piston 1 having an inclined head 4 to vary the beginning of injection.
