Class 72 [Also in Group XII] In a method for treating in a furnace the inside wall of one or several hollow bodies at a time by means of an active gas which is led through the body, the gas after having traversed the body at working temperature is discharged into the furnace chamber where it acts as a protective atmosphere. As shown, for nitriding firearm barrels, fresh ammonia gas is supplied, under pressure, through conduit 8 and via distributing pot 12 to barrels 21 whence it is discharged into furnace chamber 9 and finally escapes through outlet conduit 24. The fresh gas is heated to working temperature in coil 16, or outside the furnace. Carburizing with carbon monoxide is also referred to.
