Abstract

Gases suitable for the gaseous cementation of ferrous alloys are produced by cracking a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing from 5-30 per cent by volume of water within a heat treatment furnace at between 700 DEG and 950 DEG C. The furnace is constructed of material free from iron and the liquid to be cracked is fed into the furnace by a drip-feed arrangement. The preferred cracking liquid is iso-propyl alcohol containing 15-25 pre cent water. A nitrogenous liquid which is fully miscible with the alcohol/water mixture may be added to the cracking liquid when carbo-nitriding is required. Concentrated ammonia solution is the preferred nitrogenous liquid and is added in such quantity as to produce 2 1/2 -7\ba1/2 per cent of ammonia in the resultant atmosphere. Alternatively the ammonia could be added to the atmosphere in gaseous form. In an example using isopropyl alcohol containing 25 per cent by volume of water the gas obtained had the following composition: <TABS:0748320/II/1> Specification 588,547, [Group XII], is referred to.
