Abstract

Monofuels or monopropellants for reaction motors, jet-propelled devices, &c., are made by adding to propyl or isopropyl nitrate a nickel salt soluble therein, which salt decomposes when heated in the combustion chamber to give finely divided nickel particles uniformly throughout the chamber. Suitable salts are nickel carbonyl, acetyl acetonate, diisopropyldithiocarbamate and dinormalpropyldithiocarbamate. The salt, calculated as metallic nickel, is present in amount from 0.02 to 1 per cent by weight of the nitrate. The addition allows smaller combustion chambers to be used.
