EMI0003.0048

Method of Cementing Iron and Steel and Their Alloys in a Gas Atmosphere Cementing iron products in a gas atmosphere has become well established in industry.
Experience has shown that consistently good results are achieved when using a Casatmosphäre made from town gas. Although the composition fluctuates somewhat depending on the town gas from which you start, you can determine that this atmosphere is about 45-55 percent by volume hydrogen, 10-25 percent by volume carbon oxide, 10-25 percent by volume methane and the rest, round 1.0 / o "of practically inert gases.
An oven hardening process that can be referred to as carbon nitriding can also be carried out by adding a nitriding gas, such as ammonia, to the atmosphere.
It is also known to produce an atmosphere suitable for cementing by dripping liquid hydrocarbons into the furnace for heat treatment and cracking them there. In practice, mainly aliphatic compounds are used for this purpose.
How usable results can be achieved with it, there is a tendency for heavy sooting of the workpieces with the resulting damage, which can only be avoided by extremely careful monitoring of the inflow conditions.
The present invention has now set itself the goal of finding a method with which a gas atmosphere can be created that has properties that are just as good as that which is obtained from town gas. .
In this . Initially, the intention was examined which of the innumerable organic liquids capable of supplying C0, CII4 and 112 in cracking or in pyrolytic reactions at treatment temperatures in the vicinity of 700-1100 ° C, economically useful and theoretically effective.
Experience with cementing atmospheres made from town gas leads to the following requirements a) The atmosphere should be completely free of decarburization gases, such as C02 and 02, as well as water vapor.
b) 'Harmful; Sulfur compounds should not be present.
c) There should be no soot, since it prevents carburization.
d) As far as this is possible, the atmosphere should be of such a type that one is not required to maintain a certain or critical flow velocity in order to achieve satisfactory results.
These conditions narrowed the range to those liquids or liquid mixtures containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen which were free of all other elements. in particular are sulfur.
The two main classes of liquids which now came into consideration were aliphatic and aromatic or ring compounds.
The last-mentioned class comprises the benzoid, naphtenoid and similar ring compounds which, since they are unsaturated, deposit undesirable carbon in the form of soot when they break down. As a result, they were deemed unsuitable. Attention therefore turned to the aliphatic connections. Here, too, there are various subdivisions.
It was considered expedient to now look at the fully saturated compounds, since the unsaturated compounds, even in the aliphatic class, have a tendency to deposit carbon as soot when splitting, as the aromatic compounds do.
Of the aliphatic compounds, the monohydric liquid alcohols and the aliphatic ketones remained.
For practical and economic reasons, the first group was selected for a theoretical estimate of the possible reaction during cracking in the temperature range 700-950 C. The following table provides information about the most likely behavior of some easily accessible alcohols under these conditions.

<tb> CO <SEP> + <SEP> CH4 <SEP> -E- <SEP> 2112+ <SEP> C <SEP> 25% <SEP> <B> 25% <SEP> 50% </B> < SEP> (S) It should be emphasized that the following assumptions were made in the above considerations a) The cracking took place in a furnace,
which was free of air and practically free of iron.
b) The liquid was dropped into the oven at a constant rate.
c) The temperature of the furnace was kept practically constant, namely at 925 10 C.
d) Only the primary cleavage (P) was considered; only in the latter case is it likely that secondary or side reactions will occur, as indicated by (S). A consideration of the theoretically probable gas composition during cracking, as given in the table above, shows that isopropyl alcohol delivers a gas which comes closest to the atmosphere known to be effective, although the sum of the percentages for CO and CH4 is a bit high and
How long experience with prepared town gas can lead to the conclusion that soot formation must be expected if the inflow speed is not monitored very precisely.
It was therefore essential to find a liquid which, when cracked, supplies a lower amount of CH4 in order to suppress the undesired formation of soot even if the working conditions are not monitored very closely.
According to the present invention, the atmosphere for the gas cementation of iron and steel and their alloys is now produced by adding a monohydric aliphatic alcohol and water in an amount of 5 to 30 percent by volume, based on the alcohol, in an annealing furnace at a temperature between 700 and 950 "C crashes.
A nitrogen-containing liquid that is completely miscible with the alcohol-water mixture can be added to the mixture.
Such a nitrogen-containing liquid is used where there is carbonitration instead of. pure carburization. The preferred liquid for this one. Purpose is ammonia from spec. Weight 0.880 (15 C), which can be added in such amounts that the ammonia content of the resulting atmosphere is 2.5-7.5 / a.
The ammonia gas can just as easily be taken from a steel cylinder and put in gaseous form.
In the entire range of 5-30 percent by volume of water of the monohydric alcohol given above, good gas atmospheres can be obtained. In the case of isopropyl alcohol, the preferred liquid for cracking in the oven is an addition of 15-25 percent by volume of water; when it is pure carburization, while a similar amount of water and ammonia is used together when carbonization is to be carried out.
Although it is technically produced, methyl alcohol is subject to certain restrictions and is expensive even when it is procured in large quantities. Ethyl alcohol is also commercially available, but both in its 100% form and in lower grades it is subject to duty and tax charges in most countries.
As a result, attention turned to isopropyl alcohol, which is easy to get hold of, cheap and probably free of duty and tax everywhere, and which is not subject to any special regulations.
Of course, the other monohydric alcohols can also be used in an appropriate mixture with water to achieve good carburization, and the addition of aqueous ammonia (specific weight 0.880 at 15 ° C) in a suitable ratio or the introduction of gaseous ammonia in the furnace provides effective atmospheres for carbonitriding.
If you now consider the reaction that will probably occur when a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water is cracked under the conditions <I> a </I> to <I> d </I> listed above, the following equation is obtained:

The theoretical gas composition should therefore be: CO = 33.3% CH4 = 16.6 <B> 0 </B> / <B> 0 </B> 1-12 = 50e / 0 Such a gas would be ideal for the Cementing iron goods.
The equation given above must now also be considered from the following point of view: - The molecular weight of C3H70H is 60 The molecular weight of H20 is 18 If equimolecular amounts of isopropyl alcohol and water are mixed. who the, this results in a mixture of 60 Ge weight parts isopropyl alcohol and 18 Ge weight parts water.
Since the spec. The weight of isopropyl alcohol is around 0.8 and that of water is 1, the equimolecular mixture contains, based on isopropyl alcohol,

With a view to the theoretical possibilities, tests were carried out to determine the results actually to be obtained in practical operation. For the tests, complete technical equipment was used, namely a gas carburization furnace with retort,
Fan and liquid dripping device, the entire device being made of highly refractory material, practically free of iron.
The tests were carried out at a temperature of 925 C. This temperature was chosen because it represents one of the standard temperatures used in technology for the gas carburization of steels using prepared town gas.
\ The results obtained are summarized below. It is not about individual experiments, but rather results that have been checked in at least two experiments, but in most cases in a plurality of experiments. The analysis of the gases was done at the exit from the retort.

The data for isopropyl alcohol are the result of 15-20 different experiments, i. H. 45-60 separate gas analyzes.
It is interesting to compare "these results with the theoretical figures:

The difference between the practically determined values for C0, CH4 and 112 compared to the theoretical numbers can be explained by the splitting of part of the CH4, according to the equation.
CH4 + 3Fe = Fe3C (cement) + 2H2 as well as a part of the CO in the sense of 2C0 # C02 + C The correctness of this view is confirmed by the action that these gases exert on jet patterns that are used for metallurgical treatment in the retort be brought.
Another series of tests was carried out to determine whether the metallurgical results obtained with the atmosphere of isopropyl alcohol and 25 percent water correspond to those obtained with prepared town gas.
The table below shows the results obtained on EN-32 steel. This steel is listed in the $ ritish standards list <B> 970 </B> (EN series). T is the total time expended in the treatment, t is the time of active treatment, possibly followed by a diffusion period.
T = 29.75 hours, Tit = 1

The person skilled in the art will appreciate that the same hardening depth can be achieved with the same carburizing temperature, the hardening being completely free of hypereutectoid (free cementite) if the value of T / t is regulated accordingly, i.e. H. the diffusion period is extended.
The figures given in the table above are therefore satisfactory. But they show a certain lack of cleverness in the values for the total penetration depth and even more so in the values for the a'utectoid depth.
Have more thought about the problem too. led to the view that the amount of water in the mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water was perhaps a little too high and therefore gave rise to the formation of too large amounts of C02 in the furnace atmosphere.
A number of tests have shown that the CO 2 content of the gases leaving the furnace. a minimum of 0-0; 3% was reached when a quantity of water of 15 percent by volume was used. With 30 percent by volume of water the C02 content was 0.4-10 / a, with 25 percent by volume of water fraudulators 0.4-0.70 / 0 and with 20 percent by volume of water it was 0.4-0.6%.
In further series of tests, a remarkable constancy was obtained for both the total penetration depth and the eutectoid depth. In a series of tests on EN-32 steel at 92'5 C using 15 volume percent water, based on isopropyl alcohol, the total penetration depth did not vary by more than 0.0025 cm.
Another comparison has now been made in the carburizing of EN-32 steel at 950 C, with prepared town gas as a benchmark. The table below shows the results obtained.
T = 2.75 hours; T / t = 1

For those skilled in the art it should be pointed out that the occurrence of free cementite (hypereutectoid.) Can be completely suppressed if the ratio T / t is set accordingly, i.e. H. the diffusion period is extended, as is the rule when using prepared town gas.
In order to check whether the results mentioned apply over the whole range of normal steel alloys - which are subjected to carbonization (the British Standards EN steel series EN-32 to EN 39), - the in-industry am Most of the steel types used, namely EN-34, 36 and 39, were selected and examined. The following; Table contains the results.
In all cases, the total time T and the diffusion ratio T / t were adhered to as is customary for the steel types mentioned when using prepared town gas. The temperature was 950 C. Of the two values given, the first always corresponds to town gas and the second to the mixture of 15 percent by volume water and 85 percent by volume isopropyl alcohol.
