Abstract
Hydrogen cyanide is produced by the interaction of ammonia and methane in the presence of molten copper and up to 10 mols., preferably 0.5-5 mols., of added hydrogen per mol. of hydrocarbon. The molten copper may be pumped magnetically and sprayed into the reaction chamber which may be empty or packed with filler bodies. Alternatively the reactant gases may be bubbled through a body of molten copper in a quartz crucible. Cold hydrogen or nitrogen may be injected on to or above a body of molten copper. Heating may be effected by induction, indirect gas heating, or an immersion burner. Two examples, specifying temperatures of 1250 DEG and 1280 DEG C. respectively, are given.
