Abstract
Urea is prepared by introducing ammonium carbamate, which has been prepared by the reaction of NH3 and CO2, with excess ammonia at elevated pressure and temperature into a reaction vessel, a part of the ammonia being taken at a temperature above its critical temperature directly from the reaction mixture leaving the vessel and recirculated partially or entirely into the reaction vessel. The ammonium carbamate may be p produced in a cooled system of pipes to which one or both of the reactants are added stepwise at elevated pressure and temperature in such quantity that the heat of reaction can be removed from the corresponding section of pipe at temperatures above the melting point of the ammonium carbamate. The conversion of the ammonium carbamate to urea is preferably effected at 100-300 atmospheres and 170 DEG C.-200 DEG C., and may take place in a heatable system of pipes. Additional ammonia may be added to the recirculation system to make up losses. Suitable apparatus for the process is described. Specification 844,110 is referred to.
