Abstract

Urea melts poor in biuret are prepared from urea melts prepared by the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide under pressure by cooling the initial biuret-containing melt to a temperature of 160 DEG C. or less while maintaining a pressure of more than 100 atmospheres and then decompressing to normal pressure. The cooling to 160 DEG C. or less may be effected by partial decompression of the melt to 150 atmospheres or by spraying liquid ammonia into the melt.
