794,559. Nitriles. RUHRCHEMIE AKT.- GES. Jan. 8, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1956], No. 692/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 2 (3). Nitriles are prepared by heating a mixture of cyanogen chloride and a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon in the gaseous phase at a temperature above 600‹, preferably at 600-900‹ C. The mixture may be passed continuously through the reaction zone. A mixture of methane and cyanogen chloride, preferably in the ratio by volume of 3-5: 1, forms acetonitrile and hydrogen chloride at about 850‹ C. A residence time of 0.5-5 seconds is generally sufficient. Some malonitrile is also formed. Propane reacts at about 700‹ C., and butane at about 650‹ C., forming a mixture of isomeric butyronitriles and valeronitriles respectively, as well as unsaturated and chlorine-containing compounds. An example describes the production of acetonitrile.
