Abstract

1,245,758. Cooling gases containing hydrogen sulphide. NORTH WESTERN GAS BOARD. 30 Oct., 1969 [4 Nov., 1968], No. 52077/68. Heading C5E. A gas such as coke-oven gas is cooled by direct contact with water in a cooler and water collecting in the base of the cooler is after a delay passed to a cooling tower, contacted with air and the cooled water returned to the cooler, a small quantity, preferably from 0 to 5 gms per litre, an alkali metal salt of one or more anthraquinone di-sulphonic acid. The di-sulphonic acid may be the 2 : 6 or the 2 : 7 isomer or a mixture thereof. Small amounts of metal compounds such as a vanadate of ammonia or an alkali metal may also be added to the water.
