Class 72 [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for carburizing metal articles in a closed circuit in the gaseous phase comprises a closed container 4 disposed in a furnace 1, a sleeve 5 in said container having a perforated base and a cover 7 carrying the work 11, a centrifugal fan 18, and a mass of activated carbon 27. In operation, the container 4 is evacuated by a pump 25, valve 26 is closed, and valve 24 opened to allow air to pass though a drier 23 into the container, valve 22 being then closed. The fan then continuously circulates the enclosed air around the sleeve 5, over the activated carbon 22 to produce CO, up over the work and back to the fan through a hole 8 in the cover. 7. The CO carburizes the work producing CO 2 which reacts with the activated carbon to produce CO again. Ammonia may be introduced into the container for simultaneous nitriding of the work. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the fan is disposed below the carbon mass.
