Abstract
A method of carbocementing a metal article in a subatmospheric environment to produce a preselected amount of surface absorbed carbon and a diffuse carbon gradient in said article, comprising the steps of heating the article in a heating chamber in a subatmospheric environment in removing adsorbed gases and other impurities from said article and cleaning the surfaces thereof, periodically introducing a carbon source in said chamber, and then evacuating said chamber to generate one or more impulses from the source carbon in said chamber to remove any unwanted residual reactive products produced by the carbon source and promote the effective circulation of carbon vapor around said article, each of said impulses including filling the chamber with a carbocementation gas up to a pressure that is maintained in high conditions tmospheric, defining the carbonation gas as the carbon source and forming carbon vapor and residual reagents in said chamber after being admitted to it, each pulse including the removal of residual reagents from the chamber after each filling operation to admit the carbocementation gas to said chamber, controlling the amount of carbocementation gas admitted to said heating chamber during each filling operation in relation to the partial pressure of carbon vapor in said chamber, in which the partial pressure of the vapor is maintained of carbon at a value between zero and the saturation point of carbon vapor within the chamber, inclusive, so that the absorption and diffusion of carbon vapor in said article is obtained at a controlled speed to produce a uniform coating of a preselected carbon potential in that article.
