Abstract

Steels containing more than 0.25 per cent carbon and which are susceptable to surface decarburization are annealed in a vacuum in which the pressure is maintained at not more than 0.1 mm. of mercury. The steels may be pickled before annealing in vacuum but in the case of steels which are sensitive to pickling, e.g. NiCr stainless steels, this operation may be performed after annealing, or such steels may be annealed at low temperature, e.g. 650 DEG C., pickled, and then vacuum annealed. If the steels show surface decarburization before annealing they may be heated in a carburizing atmosphere during or after the vacuum anneal. Stainless steels having analyses 0.25-1.5 per cent C, 10-30 per cent Cr, up to 5.0 per cent Ni, up to 5 per cent Si, up to 5 per cent Mn, Mo, W, V, Co, Al individually or in combination, and up to 2 per cent of each of Ti, Nb, N, and Cu, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities, may be treated by the process.
